Personal Travel Insurance Guide
Personal Travel Insurance Guide — guidance and information from Ipswich Insurance Brokers, a Steadfast and CBN member broker.
What is personal travel insurance?
Personal travel insurance covers financial losses arising from events that interrupt or affect personal travel — cancellation costs, medical expenses overseas, delayed or lost luggage, and travel delays. It is available as a single trip policy (for one journey) or an annual multi-trip policy (covering all journeys within a year up to a maximum trip duration).
What this cover may include
Cover availability and terms vary between insurers and depend on individual circumstances. Subject to acceptance, a policy may include:
- Overseas medical expenses and evacuation
- Trip cancellation and curtailment costs
- Delayed, lost or damaged luggage
- Travel delay benefits
- Personal liability while travelling
Common exclusions to be aware of
The following are commonly excluded under standard policy wordings. Specific exclusions vary between insurers — always review the Product Disclosure Statement before purchasing.
- Pre-existing medical conditions (unless specifically declared and accepted)
- High-risk activities without appropriate extension
- Travel to regions under Australian government “Do not travel” advisory
- Cancellation for change of mind
- Losses arising from intoxication

Frequently asked questions
Do I need travel insurance for domestic travel?
Domestic travel insurance is available and can cover trip cancellation, luggage and emergency assistance within Australia. Medical cover is less critical domestically given Medicare, but cancellation and luggage cover can still be valuable. Whether domestic cover is worthwhile depends on the cost of the trip and your risk tolerance.
What happens if I need medical treatment overseas?
Most comprehensive travel policies include overseas medical expenses, including hospitalisation, emergency treatment and medical evacuation back to Australia. The quality and accessibility of medical facilities varies significantly by destination — having adequate medical cover is one of the most important reasons to arrange travel insurance for international travel.
Are pre-existing conditions covered?
Pre-existing conditions are typically subject to a declaration process. Some conditions may be covered, excluded or subject to an additional premium. Failure to declare a relevant pre-existing condition can affect medical claims arising from that condition. Always declare pre-existing conditions accurately during the application process.
What to look for when comparing personal travel insurance policies
When reviewing options, the following points are worth considering. This is general guidance — the right approach depends on your specific situation.
Declare all pre-existing medical conditions accurately. Review the medical cover limit for your destination — countries with high medical costs (such as the United States) require higher limits. Check the cancellation cover limit — ensure it reflects the full non-refundable cost of the trip. Review the luggage limit and any per-item sub-limits for valuable items. Confirm the definition of ‘travel delay’ and the qualifying waiting period. Review any adventure activity exclusions if your itinerary includes outdoor or high-risk activities.

About Ipswich Insurance Brokers
Ipswich Insurance Brokers is a Steadfast and CBN member broker operating under an Australian Financial Services Licence. We act on your behalf — not on behalf of any insurer. We compare options across a broad panel of approved insurers, arrange cover, provide documentation and support claims. We are remunerated by commission from the insurer, disclosed in our Financial Services Guide. All information on this page is general guidance only — see our Disclaimer. Contact us on 07 3503 1404 to arrange travel insurance before your next trip.
Travel insurance should be arranged before departure — not during a trip when an issue has already arisen. Policies typically exclude events that have already occurred or are reasonably foreseeable at the time of purchase. Arrange cover as soon as travel is booked to maximise the cancellation cover period. See our Personal Travel Insurance page for more information.
